Polavaram will be completed within the stipulated time
Union Minister for Water Resources and River Development Uma Bharti here on Thursday clarified that Polavaram project would be completed within the stipulated time. The Union minister made a statement in the Lok Sabha on Thursday on the completion of Polavaram project. She said it was decided to complete the project within the stipulated time when the project was announced as a national project.
With the completion of the project, some 88,000 people in 222 villages would be displaced, she said, adding that 1,730 persons in six villages have been rehabilitated. Expressing satisfaction at the pace of construction of multi-purpose project work, she said the project would be completed within the time. She said Polavaram project has been taken up by the Andhra Pradesh government and an expenditure of Rs 5,575.35 crore was incurred till March 31 this year.
Rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected persons and families is being carried out as per the policies in place, she said. The project is expected to irrigate an area of 2.91 lakh hectares apart from generating 960 MW of power. In addition, 23.44 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) water would be available for domestic and industrial uses while 80 TMC of water would be there for diversion to the Krishna Basin.
