Poisoning the mangoes!

Hyderabad : Mango, perhaps the most sought-after fruit, has arrived by truckloads in season; but a substantial portion of it unfortunately is packed with harmful chemicals as avaricious merchants continue to employ prohibited methods to ripen the fruit quickly for raking in the moolah.

Merchants are using calcium carbide to ripen the king of fruits, though it is known to cause illness to consumers, as it contains dangerous elements like arsine and phosphine. Arsine causes problems to skin and eyes, whereas phosphine damages pulmonary organs.

Calcium carbide is even imported by mango merchants at Gaddi Annaram fruit market to use it widely for quickening the ripening process so that they could move consignments fast to the other parts of the country and to foreign markets. One can see this pernicious practice going on openly at the market as groups of workers break carbide cubes into pieces to make packets for use by merchants.

Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy re-elected CPI general Secretary

PUDUCHERRY: The Communist Party of India on Sunday re-elected Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy as its General Secretary. Gurudas Das Gupta was elected as Deputy General Secretary, party National Council Secretary Shameem Faizee told reporters on Sunday, the concluding day of the five-day 22nd national Congress.

It also elected D Raja, Shameem Faizee, Amarjeet Kaur, Atul Kumar Anjaan, Ramendrakumar, Pannian Ravindran and Dr K Narayana to the party Central National Secretariat, he said. A nine-member Central Control Commission, a 125-member National Council and a 31-member national executive were also elected, Faizee said. More than 20 per cent of the members of the national council and the national executive were new faces, he said.

Saina, Srikanth make it double delight at India Open

New Delhi : Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal won her maiden $275,000 India Open Superseries crown while K Srikanth made it a memorable day as he also annexed the men’s singles title here on Sunday. The current World No.2, who will take the top position when the new ranks will be announced, defeated former World Champion Ratchanok Intanon in straight games in the women's singles final while World No.4 Srikanth defeated Danish World No.6 Viktor Axelsen 18-21, 21-13, 21-12 in 55 minutes.

Playing at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, the No.1 seed came out on top to win 21-16, 21-14 in 49 minutes to take a 6-3 lead in career meetings over the third seeded Thai, who won here in 2013. This is Saina's second title of the year after winning the India Grand Prix Gold in January in Lucknow. She had also reached the All England final earlier this month where she lost to reigning World Champion Carolina Marin of Spain.
